Insurace for Auto Glass Material & Service

While driving along the highway, there are numerous things that can fall on and crack your auto’s windshield, side windows, rear windows or sunroof. These can be little things such as rocks, pebbles and even larger items from passing vehicles. This explains why auto glass repairs and replacements are very common.

Just like with many other types of accidents, insurance is used to fix these items. Many auto glass shops have procedures and guidelines for filing insurance claims. Most of them work with major insurance companies, which makes the insurance claim process much easier. When an auto glass mishap occurs, consider the following things when filing insurance claims for auto glass repairs and replacements.

Comprehensive Insurance Coverage

If auto glass is damaged due to other mishaps besides auto collision, comprehensive auto coverage should take care of it. This is the type of insurance that covers damage that results from vandalism, fire, bad weather and collisions with animals.

However, ensure that auto glass repairs and replacements are covered by your insurance company under comprehensive coverage. This is because some insurance companies will only accept claims for damage to back or side auto windows. They do not approve auto glass claims for front windshield damage.

Should You File an Insurance Claim?

Is it really worth using your insurance for auto glass damage? If the repair or replacement costs less than the insurance deductible, it may not be wise to file an insurance claim. Even if the repair is just a small amount more than than the deductible, it probably isn’t worth filing a claim.

Remember, the insurance company is only contributing a small portion towards the repair or replacement cost. However, there is a big chance that your rates will increase once the claim is filed. This is a high probability if a long list of similar claims exist. Consider how this claim may affect future insurance premiums. Insurance companies vary when it comes to increasing rates after this type of claim has been filed.

Working with the Insurance Company and Repair Shop

Once your claim has been approved, the auto glass repair or replacement is done by a specific repair shop. It is normally designated by the insurance company, or by one of your personal choice. The trick is to choose a shop that offers good service at a fair price. A credible company should provide quality services with many different options. For instance, does the auto repair shop have options such as flat-glass, side mirror repairs and replacements for both domestic and foreign makes of vehicles? Obviously, the work must be performed by certified professionals that are expert craftsmen. In addition, all work must be covered by a warranty.

Most major insurance companies will only work with reputable repair shops, but you’re still responsible for ensuring that your insurance company gets the right information for your insurance claim. This involves sending the company a copy of your repair or replacement receipt. Make sure that it displays your policy number, name, accident date and phone number

All in all, auto glass repairs and replacements are common. They are simple to fix with insurance coverage. Understand how the process works, and work with both your insurance company and repair shop to get the job done in a timely manner.
